Had a play around with a couple of garden plants, quite pleased with the results ;

Cloudy, Rain, Light > Blustery S/SW
Yet another miserable wet & grey day. The rain eased off a bit around mid-day, so i thought i`d have a look around the Gypsy Marsh. Pretty much a waste of time really, with only a flock of 14 Redwing present. Oh!! and of course the resident Highland Cattle ( painted ) ;

That`s it for today folks, hope tomorrow is better.

Saturday 24th Feb 2007

Cloudy, Sunny Spells, Light W
Unfortunately todays trip to Gibraltar Point was cancelled, so i sat at home wondering where i could go. After about half an hour i decided to go and get some printer ink from the Tesco store in Wath.
I walked along part of the Trans-Pennine Trail that takes you to Manvers Lake, and as i did i saw & heard my first Curlew of the year, which was seen to land at the Old Moor RSPB, ( Spring is on the way ).
On arriving at Manvers Lake i added another couple of species to the year lists - Green Woodpecker, Jay ( site ticks ) and 2 Linnet. Other highlights were ;
Skylark 6+, Reed Bunting 7, Wigeon 14, Great Crested Grebe 8.
After Tesco i walked home along the footpath that i`ve named the Dogshit Path ( for obvious reasons ), where the only bird highlights were ;
3 Bullfinch & 2 Lesser Redpoll.
On the floral front, i found 2 trees that i`ve not managed to identify yet ;

While i was out, Mike rang me ( along with John ) to ask if i fancied a vist to Sprotbrough to see a clump of Early Crocus`s that he found during the week. Me being me, i jumped at the chance of seeing something new. There was also a few more flowering plants to see & photograph ;

Early Crocus

Early Purple Orchid ( another new one for me. I will be
back when it flowers )

Early Dog-Violet

Primrose

Then John took us round the other side of the river to see Cherry Plum. This shrub/tree looks very much like Blackthorn but lacks the thorns. It`s also very fragrant ;

Back at home, nothing of interest birdwise but plenty of frogs about ;

Not a lot from the Wombwell garden this morning with the only highlights being ;
3 Great Spotted Woodpecker & 2 Jay.
A couple more flowering things to photograph, although i`m not sure about the first one, but it is a tree with red leaves. Any ideas anyone ? ;

Rosemary

The only thing to report from my own garden, is the first batch of Frog spawn ;

Just had another invite, to join Mike ( Richardson ) & John ( Law ) on another weedin trip tomorrow. We`re off to Gibraltar Point ( Lincolnshire ) in search of Winter Aconite & Yellow Star of Bethlehem. Another 2 plant ticks under the belt :)

Overcast, Showers, Light S
I was going to wait until Saturday to visit the Old Moor RSPB, but i changed my mind and went this morning. Glad i did, not only were the hides empty ( jam packed at the weekends ), i also had my first Peregrine of the year, which shot through with about 200 Black-headed Gulls hot on its tail.
Plenty of other birds about, all of which were the usual wetland species. Apart from the Peregrine the only other highlight was watching the BHG`s as they were constantly trying to hold on to potential nest sites on the islands.
Managed to get a few record digiscoped shots of a couple of subjects ;

Cormorants

Black-headed Gulls

Gadwall

Teal

* Updates ( yesterday ) ;
*The unidentified micro moth from the Wombwell garden as now been identified as Agonopterix heracliana.
*At about 20.30 i went out into my garden and had a Oystercatcher calling overhead.

Wednesday 21st Feb 2007

Cloudy, Sunny Spells, Light S/SW
The Wombwell garden this morning produced my 7th moth of the year, well, it will be when i`ve identified it. It`s either a Agonopterix or a Depressaria species ;

Bird highlights from here were,
Song Thrush, Jay, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Sparrowhawk 2 females sparring, Magpie pair nest building, Stock Dove 2.
I also found my first ( large ) beetle of the year, which i think can only be Pterostichus niger ( below ) ;

The first of the many Crocus`s have finally opened ;

Then a visit to the Nether Haugh garden did`nt produce anything better than 4+ Tree Sparrow & 3 Red-legged Partridge.
Did a get a couple of pics of some other stuff ;

Starling

Greenfinch

Blackthorn

In case anyone`s wondering how i did with the moth trap in my garden last night, i caught absolutely zilch :(

Tuesday 20th Feb 2007

Cloudy, Bright Spells, Light S
The Wombwell garden produced 3 moth species this morning, 2 of which ( both micro`s ) were firsts of the year. The Acleris notana decided to bugger off just as i was about to take the pic, the Amblyptilia acanthadactyla would only settle on the greenhouse windows ( hence only the silhouette shot, below ) and there was a Pale Brindled Beauty by one of the security lights, but i was beaten to it by a Blue Tit ;

Again, nothing really of interest on the bird front, so i turned my attention to a couple of garden plants. Flowering Currant is starting to spring into bloom & the flowers of the Christmas Rose were looking better than ever ;

( painted )

On my way home i had to call into the Retail Park at Cortonwood and as i was leaving the Argos store a Green Woodpecker ( patch year tick ) flew over the car park.
Nothing from my garden as yet today, but i`m going to stick the ( Actinic ) moth trap out for a couple of hours.
Did a Frog count last night and there must have been about 50 of them in and around the pond ;

Fog ( am ), Overcast ( pm ), Light S/SE
Nothing at all of interest bird wise at the Wombwell garden this morning. However, i did find my 4th moth species of the year, a very early Pale Tussock. I found it in the greenhouse, so that`s probably why its emerged now and not at the usual time of May ;

Then a visit to Cortonwood did`nt produce anything different to previous visits ( surprise, surprise ). Highlights ;
Willow Tit 2, Song Thrush 3, Mute Swan 2, Canada Goose 2, Tufted Duck 11, Goosander 4 ( 2 drakes ), Pochard 2 ( 1 drake ), Kingfisher 1.
Also the first of the Willows has started to flower ;

Sunday 18th Feb 2007

Another planned day out finally arrived, and little did i know how excellent a day it would actually turn out to be.
I was picked up at 07.00 by Colin Noble and i was introduced to his fellow birders, Keith Fisher & Dave Atkinson.
Our first stop of the day was to Langden Beck in Teesdale to see Black Grouse ( a new species for me ). On arriving in the area Dave quickly picked out a single cock bird, which we viewed from the car. Then they thought we`d be better off visiting the Lek site but unfortunately it was a bit too early in the year for any displaying birds. So we decided to turn round and head back to where we had the original sighting when ( again ) Dave picked up quite a few birds in a distant field. On looking through our optics we could see they were all cock birds. An amazing 18 in total and then Keith found 3 females, slightly closer than the others. These 3 females gave me the opportunity to try and get a record shot, albeit at distance ;

Before we set off, i got a couple of scenic shots of the area ;

The green field in the centre of this pic held the 18 males

Quite chuffed with our sightings we headed off to our next port of call at Haweswater in the Lake District ( not before adding another 2 male & 7 female Black Grouse around the corner from the other birds ).
Out target species at Haweswater was Englands only resident Golden Eagle ( there used to be a pair but the female sadly died a few years ago ).
It did`nt take us too long to reach our intended destination and while driving up by the lake Dave thought he saw a Red Squirrel run across the road, which was confirmed as we watched it run along through the adjacent woodland.
We decided against using the main car park ( as it was full ) and also against walking to the eagle viewpoint. So we parked on the roadside and set up a watch in view of the area the eagle was known to frequent. Things were`nt looking promising as there was loads of walkers along the ( eagle ) ridge, but we stuck at it. About an hour later, Keith shouted " i`ve got it ", a few seconds after that and we were all on it. What a bird!!! giving excellent if not distant views. In fact a better performance than any i`ve ever seen in Scotland. We watched it for at least 10 minutes before it was lost to view. During this time, it`s huge size could be clearly seen as it dwarfed the 8 Ravens that were in the same area. Just one word to describe this experience " AWESOME "
Also had a Dipper from here, which was observed swimming in open water and coming up with 2 small fish ( twice ).

( the ridge where the Eagle performed )

What a truly inspiring part of the country this is. I`m more than pleased to have booked the lakes as our holiday destination this year :)

As time was getting on we decided to make our way home, calling in at the Harewood House area to see the Red Kites. Once again we did`nt fail with our target, with 14 birds being seen along with 2 Common Buzzards. You can`t tell, but the 3 biggest trees in the pic below held at least 4 Red Kites & a single Buzzard ;

And last but not least, i would like to thank Colin, Dave & Keith for inviting me along on this very memorable day. It will take something really special to beat this outing.

Overcast, Brighter ( pm ), Light N
The local plant trip that was cancelled on Thursday, was on this morning. I joined Mike ( Richardson ) & John ( Law ) to visit the Steetly Quarry at Conisbrough, where on a previous visit John had found the locally scarce Spurge Laurel ;

This site also held host to quite a number of Stinking Hellebore, which was a new one me ( in the wild ) ;

( I`m enjoying this weedin lark, especially when in the company of the 2 aforementioned characters. Forget Morecambe & Wise etc, you want to see/hear these 2 when they`re in full flow :)

Back at home, where the bird of the day was a Goldcrest that was seen feeding briefly in the Pear tree. Other highlights ;
Greenfinch 8, Song Thrush 2, Cormorant 1 E, Long-tailed Tit 3, Mistle Thrush 2.
The hog put in another appearance last night and the frog count continues to rise with now 20 individuals ;

Overcast, Rain ( all day ), Light S/SE
Just garden stuff for today. The first bird of the day was a year tick for my garden, with a Grey Heron perched on the fence briefly, at first light. Not many other highlights with just - Song Thrush 1, Greenfinch 9, Blackbird 6+, Long-tailed Tit 1.
Have`nt done a Frog count yet this evening but there was at least 10 present last night ;

PS - unfortunately due to the weather, Storm`s riding & road safety test this morning was cancelled )

Thursday 15th Feb 2007

Patchy Cloud, Bright Spells, Blustery S
Not a lot doing today. An afternoon trip to see a couple of wildflower species was cancelled at the last minute. So i got Jakki ( her indoors, well that`s not true cos she`s never in ) to take me to see an escaped Eagle Owl that has been at nearby Bawtry over the last few days. Just my luck, no sign of it despite extensive searching by myself and several other birders. Oh well, it`s just an escape but i would have liked to get a couple of pics.
Anyway, back at home the highlights from the garden were ;
Dunnock 3, Goosander - pair SW, Greenfinch 9, Goldfinch 22, Chaffinch 1 female.

No sign of the Hog this evening and i`ve not been to check on the frog numbers yet. Regards the latter, despite it being a very mild winter, this years first sightings were actually 10 days later than last year.

NB - my eldest daughter Storm is taking her ( Horse ) Riding & Road Safety Test tomorrow morning. Hope she passes. Good luck :)

Overcast am, Sunny pm, Light W
A visit to the Wombwell garden this morning did`nt produce anything new. Highlights ;
Song Thrush 1, Great Spotted Woodpecker 2, Treecreeper 1, Jay 1, Mistle Thrush 4, Stock Dove - pair, showing an interest in the owl nest box.
As it`s Valentines Day here`s a couple of flower pics ( paintings ), 1 wild & 1 cultivar ;

Wood Forget Me Not

Gold Laced Polyanthus

Nothing of interest birdwise from my garden, but when i went out to check on the Frogs this evening ( still 6 by the way ), i stumbled upon my first garden Hedgehog of the year ;

*Stop Press* - another day out this coming Sunday, courtesy of Colin. We`re off to Teesdale in search of Black Grouse. Having never seen these before, i`d be daft to turn this offer down.
Thanks Col :)

They`re Back !!

Just been out in the garden and found my first Common Frogs ( at least 6 ) of the year. Great to see that they`ve found my new pond to their liking ;

After tonights rain, i strongly suspect there`ll be quite a few more come morning.

Cloudy, Sunny Spells, Light W
After yesterdays excellent day out, it was back to normal today. A visit to Cortonwood this morning did`nt produce anything different on the bird front ;
Song Thrush 2, Mute Swan 2, Canada Goose 2, Tufted Duck 13, Pochard 1 female, Grey Heron 1, Tree Sparrow 3, Black-headed Gull 73 ( including 2 in summer plumage ), Common Gull 2, Grey Wagtail 1.
A couple more plant species are beginning to flower. Unlike yesterday, there was no reason to be cautious where i placed my feet ;

Lungwort

Coltsfoot

The only thing of interest from the garden at home, were a pair of Great Tits inspecting nest boxes. Hope they decide to breed this year ( they abandoned nest building last year ).

A Rare Day Out

400 miles & 10 hours later, i`ve finally got my first ever plant twitch under the belt. All in all it was a very enjoyable day, spent in the company of John Law, Mike Richardson & Ray Platts. John, in particular had me in fits of laughter all day with his down to earth sense of humour.
Anyway, we arrived at our destination of Stanner Rocks at around 13.10 to find Andrew Ferguson, the representive of the Countryside Council for Wales waiting patiently for us. This is such a sensitive site that a warden as to be present to show you where you can and cannot place your feet ( no word of a lie , that is 100% true ) ;

Stanner Rocks - 700 million years old

Managed to get one shot of our target species the Early Star of Bethlehem ( Radnor Lily ), which was far from easy due to the placement of your feet. There were 5 in total that we could see, but they were`nt at their best especially after last weeks snowfall, but at least we managed to see one of Britains rarest flowering plants ;

Like i said before, it was a thoroughly enjoyable outing and i just hope i get invited on the next one.
Thanks John :)

Update ( to previous post )

It`s all sorted now, i`m off to North Wales in the morning to see & photograph Early Star of Bethlehem. Full trip report & pics tomorrow. Excited, you bet i am :)

Sunday 11th Feb 2007

Rain am, Drier & Brighter pm
After yesterdays miserable weather conditions, i was more than ready to get out this morning. Although i did`nt see that much, it made a change from seeing nowt!!!!. Highlights ;
BROOMHILL FLASH - Goldeneye 4 ( 1 drk ), Ruddy Duck 4, Redshank 2
WOMBWELL INGS - Shelduck 3, Goldeneye pair ( male displaying )
GARDEN - Cormorant 1 W, Song Thrush 2, Blackbird 6+, Greenfinch 4 ( 1 with alloy leg ring ), Sparrowhawk 1, Goldfinch 9, Starling circa 50 ;

Starlings ( digiscoped & painted )

I`m absolutely kicking myself. I`ve just been offered a lift to Wales tomorrow morning to see & photograph Early Star of Bethlehem ( the only site in the whole of the UK of this flowering plant ), but i`m totally penniless so i`ve had to decline. B****** :(

Freezing Fog, Rain turning to Snow, Light variable
Another visit to Cortonwood this morning did`nt produce a great deal of change to yesterdays sightings, with the difference`s being ;
Goldfinch circa 30, Pochard 2 female, Moorhen have increased to 10 & Reed Bunting had dropped to just 2 birds.
As you can see from the pic below, photography was definately off the agenda today ;

Again, the harsh conditions failed to bring much to my garden with a single Sparrowhawk & 6 Long-tailed Tits being the highlights.

After yesterdays find of 3 Red-crested Pochard at Manvers, my luck continued at Cortonwood this morning, when i had my first ever site record of Jack Snipe. The bird was flushed from the edge of the lake after nearly treading on it. It subsequently flew the short distance to the island where it was lost to view. Also added ( Common ) Snipe to the year list with a single bird being flushed from the Post Office Pond.
Other highlights were ;
Song Thrush 2, Skylark 3, Canada Goose 20, Mute Swan 2, Tufted Duck 5 ( 2 drake ), Pochard 3 ( 2 drake ), Tree Sparrow - several, Grey Heron 1, Reed Bunting 3, Black-headed Gull 60+, Common Gull 2.

These distant record shots don`t really do these birds justice, but at least you can tell what they are ;

A visit to the Wombwell garden this morning produced the following highlights ;
Woodpigeon circa 700 NW + at least 2 pairs nest building in the garden, Great Spotted Woodpecker 3, Song Thrush 1, Sparrowhawk 1
With the unseasonally warm sunshine i kept my eyes open for any insects and i was rewarded with my first Red Admiral of the year.

I then left here with the intention of visiting the Cortonwood area, but i only managed to skirt the western boundary. Nevertheless, i still managed to add a single Skylark to the site yea
