Rain, Overcast (am), Sunny (pm), N 2>3

A bit of variety at Cortonwood this morning. The best of which, were my first returning Goosanders of the autumn/winter, with 4 redheads on the lake. The other notables were : 1 Great Crested Grebe, 1 Kingfisher, 6 House Martin, 2 Sparrowhawk, 3 Redpoll W & 8 Swallow ......N ? ( must have got their directions off a Sat Nav )

2 Swallows flew ( in the right direction ) S, over the garden, this afternoon. An excellent count of 6 feeding Dunnocks was a new maximum for the garden. Also managed 3 species of butterfly : singles of Large White, Red Admiral & Comma ;

Saturday 4th October 2008

Cloudy, Patchy Light Rain, SW 4 gusting >6

The forecasted frost never materialised, nevertheless it was still a chilly one this morning. First light saw me at Cortonwood, where 3 Song Thrush together on the spoil heap, were most likely migrant birds. Apart from these, it was pretty much standard fare ; singles of Great Crested Grebe & Cormorant, 5 Meadow Pipit, a further 4 Cormorant flew over, heading W & a single House Martin went S.

Back home for some brekky, then off to the Manvers area. Nothing special on the bird front, with the most notable being : 5 Great Crested Grebe, 46 Tufted Duck & a single Green Woodpecker.

The other week, Steve Gale mentioned on his blog about alien plant/flower species that are growing wild in the countryside. Well, i found one such specimen along one of the new drainage ditches at Manvers. Although it is most likely a garden escape, it is one that i`m not at all familiar with. Any suggestions on its id will be gratefully appreciated ;

Spent the rest of the day at home, where the only notable sighting was of 14 Golden Plover, heading S at 4pm.

PS - Jakki took Storm to have a look at her potential new pony ( Petrel ) yesterday evening. Needless to say, it was`nt as good in the flesh as it sounded on paper. The search continues.

Friday 3rd October 2008

Sunshine & Patchy Cloud, Cold N/NW 4>5

Speckled Wood - Wombwell

Cortonwood ;
A Little Owl along the service road behind B&Q would have been a patch tick, had it not been dead ( road kill ). Both myself & a friend reckon it could qualify for being a patch first, as it must have been alive to have been on the patch in the first place.
So, it`s down to you good people out there to be the jury on this one, Tick or No Tick ;

"A real shame"

The only "live" highlights were all singles of : Great Crested Grebe, Cormorant, Great Spotted Woodpecker & Chiffchaff.

Back at home, it was nice to see something else visiting my feeding station,

A ground frost, forecast for tomorrow morning, may or may not bring something else to the feeders.

Thursday 2nd October 2008

Sunshine & Showers, W/NW 2>3

Wombwell Garden ;
The best of the birds from here early morning, was a Crossbill "chup chupping" away, but i did`nt get a glimpse of it.
The best of the rest were : Speckled Wood &

Scaeva pyrastri

Shaggy Parasol

Still pretty quiet at Cortonwood, with the most notables being : 1 Great Crested Grebe, 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 7 Meadow Pipit, 2 Skylark SW & a singing Chiffchaff.

A calling Coal Tit was the best of the birds from my garden. Also a couple of Inverts : Common Darter, Large White & Comma.

Wednesday 1st October 2008

Sunshine & frequent Showers, W gusting >6

A slight improvement compared to yesterday at Cortonwood, but still nothing to write home about.
Singles of Great Crested Grebe, Cormorant, Pochard, Swallow & House Martin. Also 2 singing Chiffchaff & about a dozen or so Meadow Pipits kicking around the spoil heap.

Tuesday 30th September 2008

Rain ( clearing mid-afternoon ), then Bright Spells, W 3 gusting >5

Nothing from my garden this morning, apart from this grainy pic of a Magpie. If only there`d been some light, i might have done the bird justice ;

An early evening visit to Cortonwood, was as dire as a dire thing. The only notable was, "yes,you`ve guessed it", the ever present Great Crested Grebe.

On a different note. How`s about this from a birders point of view. To cut it short, Storm`s in desperate need of a bigger pony. So, Jakki spent the morning scouring the net looking for said creature. She found the ideal one. On paper it`s everything Storm is looking for. The canny thing is, is its name. I bet most of you are thinking it`s called Storm. You`d be wrong, it`s called Petrel. Now if that is`nt a match made in heaven, i don`t know what is. Too much of a coincidence not to be missed, me thinks.
There might be one small hitch though, someone else has already booked in to view it ( this evening ). So, Jakki`s got to phone back tonight and hopefully arrange a viewing for herself.

Cortonwood ;
Not a great deal here mid-morning. A Chiffchaff was singing from along the Trans-Pennine Trail. The highlights from the lake were : 1 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Barnacle/Canada hybrids, 1 drk Pochard & 6 House Martin.

Called into Morrisons while i was there and got a great bargain of a 2Gb SD memory card, for the amazing price of a " fiver ". You can`t go wrong at that now, can you.
